My daughter requested a jellyfish bento for lunch tomorrow after seeing pictures of them on my Tumblr feed. DAMN YOU, TUMBLR, AND YOUR LOVELY ARTSY OBSESSION WITH PRETTY JELLYFISH PHOTOS.
LEFT: grilled eggplant flowers, slaw (red cabbage, walnuts, raisins, apples), mango.
RIGHT: jellyfish - “oral arms” (the white stringies, yes I had to Google that to make sure I got it right) and body made from rice paper, tentacles made from rice noodles, eggplant frame for cup shape; rice/rice vinegar and food color.

My collection of Avatar: The Last Airbender bentos so far (in the order I made them). Might break it down into separate posts later so I can list all the ingredients but I like having them all laid out pretty :D

Nothing says “Saturday night fun” like carving a 1:6 scale chess game out of food!
FRONT: chess game (carved potato/food color, raw spaghetti to hold each piece in place, rice/nori board), kimchi furikake.
BACK: grilled eggplant flowers, stir fried mackeral, blackberries, chocolate wafers.
And in case anyone’s wondering the pieces are: white bishop, white pawn, white king, black rook, black king

11/25/2011 Muppet Bento!
TOP: Kermit (kiwi, asian pear, nori details), rainbow (pickled radish/food color), shredded carrot.
BOTTOM: Fozzy (riceball, unagi furikake, radish/nori details, potato hat), sauteed brussels with pecans.
Taking my daughter on a Muppet picnic tomorrow. I hope the Fozzy riceball doesn’t taste funny (WOCKA WOCKA!) :D

Will hopefully have a new bento for this year soon—but for now, here’s the one I made for last Thanksgiving.
TOP: Turkey (nori outline + eel, salmon, and egg furikake) on rice.
BOTTOM: Potato cornucopia (seasoned and baked) filled with steamed broccoli and carrots, carved apple leaves, shredded pork ribs, plum jam tart.
This was probably one of the first 3D potato carvings I ever did, and still one of my favorites, just because of the nice natural color and texture :D
